GoodBrothers! Maro Onokpise

Tell us about you.

Well first and foremost I’m thankful and humbled to be interview by SistersSpace.  I’ve been keeping track of the great work that you do and it’s a pleasure to do this interview. I’m really a simple guy that grew up in Tallahassee, FL and graduated from the University of Central Florida. Go Knights!  It may shock people, but I’m really a home body.  I love being around my family and friends and would do anything for them.

You were recognized as one Orlando’s 40 under 40 business owners.   What inspired you to start your own company?

Let me start by saying that making Orlando’s 40 Under 40 is an amazing accomplishment.  I’m not saying that to toot my own horn, but the individuals that are nominated are some of the best at what they do, and it’s an honor to be among my fellow nominees and award winners.

I’ve actually been an entrepreneur since I was 14 years old.  I wasn’t old enough to get a job, so I started a car wash and lawn service.  I used to always see people washing their cars after they cut their grass, and I thought I could do that for them while they enjoyed their day.  I made some flyers and passed them around the neighborhood and was able to get some business pretty quickly.

Fast forward to where I am now, there is something truly special about being an entrepreneur.  It isn’t for everyone, and if you’re doing it to “make money”, you will fail!  Ask most successful entrepreneurs and they will tell you that they would do it even if they weren’t getting paid.  As an entrepreneur, you have the ability to change lives and change the future.  Look at Google, Apple, and Facebook.  These organizations literally changed and are continuing to shape the world.  Additionally, you can help great causes with your organization.  Similar to what we are doing with our Food for Jobs program.  What you do with your company is just as important was what your company does.

What is one thing that should not be on a resume?

I’ve seen a lot of resumes and you would be amazed at some of the things people put on their resume.  The one thing that people should leave off of their resume is race.  Let your credentials and work history speak for you.

What is your favorite quote/motto?

I love quotes and anyone who is friends with me on Facebook knows that I like to post a daily motivational quote.  One of my more recent favorite quotes is “Victory Loves Preparation”.  This is so true.  As an entrepreneur and in life, Preparation is everything!  This is also true when someone is getting ready for an interview.  Potential customers and employers can recognize who was and who wasn’t prepared.  Guess who they’re going to hire or award the business to?

Last book read?

The last book I read was “Delivering Happiness” by Tony Hsieh (pronounced Shay), the founder of Zappos.com.  I’m a big fan of Entrepreneurs and I love to read their back stories.  This is a great book about having a passion for what you do, building something special and delivering the best customer service experience possible.

Favorite Musician

I’m a big Cold Play fan.

If you could invite one sister (dead or alive) to dinner who would it be?

Wow…this is a great question.  The obvious answer is Halle Berry, but there are so many wonderful sisters, past and present that have done outstanding things.  I think I’d like to take Harriet Tubman out for a drink.  I’d love to pick her brain to just see what drove her.  In a time where she knew she could be killed, she was able to engineer some of the greatest events in American history.

Awesome, one last question what do you think Ms. Tubman would be drinking?

I think she would either be drinking scotch or whiskey…lol.
