Ready, Set, GO

As January 1 fast approaches, we are all making our New Year’s Resolutions and vowing to “not let that gym membership go to waste another year” or “get that beach body back before summer vacation.”   Year after year, the cycle continues.  Instead of going in the same circle, do something different this year.  Make a COMMITMENT to a healthier lifestyle.  In doing this, you will make a lifelong change and put a halt to the pocketbook breaking task of spending ridiculous amounts of money for the latest weight loss “miracle” or the gruesome challenge of sticking to a fad diet.

For the purpose of the New Year, let’s focus on things that you can do prepare yourself for a new beginning …a healthier lifestyle.

  1. Change your way of thinking: A healthy lifestyle begins with a healthy mindset.  You must make it up in your mind to become DEDICATED to a healthy way of living.  This does not mean that you cannot have that piece of red velvet cake that you love, but more so making healthy modifications and using that piece of cake as a reward for all of your hard work.
  2. Research: Research fitness centers and what they offer to ensure that you get the best bang for your buck when joining.  Look for aerobics classes and boot camps offered in your area.  Doing things that you like will help you to stay dedicated.  Some recommended classes are Zumba, Cardio kickboxing, Step Aerobics, and Water Aerobics.
  3. Prepare: Purchase good shoes and exercise clothing.   Good shoes and good sports bras will make for a comfortable and injury free workout.
  4. Get Active: Get moving with some type of exercise at LEAST 3 times per week.  Find a workout buddy to help you stay active and accountable.
  5. Re Stock your Cupboards: Remove all foods with high fat and sugar content and stock up on fresh fruit and veggies and lean cuts of meat.  Try to avoid purchasing snacks such as sodas, chips, and snack cakes.  Also, try to plan out your meals for the week to avoid impulse eating.

With these simple steps you will be well on your way to a New Year’s COMMITMENT to a healthier lifestyle.  Begin with a healthy lifestyle in mind and healthy living will be a breeze.  Now, as they say in a race, “Ready…Set…Go!!”  Make 2011 the beginning of a new lifestyle.
