What are your kids listening to?

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of being in the car with kids. These kids knew the words to every song on the radio.

Drake . Check.

Nicki Minaj. Check.

Wacka Flacka. Check.

You name it, they knew it.  I can’t say I’m completely guilt free. After all, my kid knew a few of the songs too.  One of the adults in the car tried to justify the memorization of the songs by saying that the kids did not know what they were singing. I don’t know what’s worse, us allowing them to speak words and not understand them or for our children to ingest, internalize and live the words and lifestyle of today’s artists.

Too Short and XXL Magazine received a lot of backlash, because they aired a video from the rapper giving young boys advice on how to turn a girl out.  Now, I know we can’t control everything our kids here and see, but I hope we are spending enough time with our children for them to listen to us, before they listen to a rapper.

After hearing of the passing of Whitney Houston, I began to conjure up memories of my youth. I knew the words to “saving all my love for you” and even “you give good love to me”.  So maybe my generation was no different.  Maybe our artists, our musicians were more respectful. Or maybe it was because the Uncle Luke’s of our generation were the exception and not the rule.  I don’t think I ever heard my mom play Uncle Luke. I did hear the songs on the playground though.

I remember my sister singing “The Greatest Love of All” at Friendship Baptist Church when I was young. I remember another girl singing “Think Big.”  These are the seeds that I want to plant in my son’s life.   Because I believe he is the future, I plan to teach him well and let him lead the way.

If you are a parent, do you sensor what your children listen to?
