What New Year’s Resolution??

Its officially February…one month in the New Year has already passed.  Many of us made our New Year’s Resolutions…most of which had something to do with losing weight, getting in shape, or eating healthier.   My question to you is have you lived up to your Resolution so far? Or have you hit a few roadblocks and started backsliding?  If you have started backsliding, I have provided you with a few tips to help you not only get back on course, but more importantly, stay the course.  After all, it is about a lifestyle change…not a quick fix.

1.       Don’t do it alone: Find a buddy that wants to accomplish goals that are similar to yours and begin a healthy journey together.  This will help you all keep each other accountable.

2.       Make a consistent schedule: Figure out how often you will exercise, what time of day, and what type of exercise you will do.  Also, get your body on a consistent eating schedule to avoid overeating.

3.       Track your progress: Keep a journal of your physical activity as well as what you eat each day.  At the end of the week, review the journal at the beginning of each week to assess what needs to be improved.

4.       Set goals and put them on paper: Don’t just set goals in your head, write them down and post them beside your bed, on your mirror, or somewhere that they will be a constant reminder.

5.       Reward yourself for accomplishing goals and milestones: when you reach a goal do something good for yourself whether it’s going to the movies and ordering popcorn or treating yourself to a much needed spa day.

6.       Begin with the end in mind: When you get discouraged think about the payoff from living a healthier lifestyle: lower blood pressure, cholesterol, longer fulfilling life, etc.

Take these tips and get on your way to getting back on track!  Remember, a healthy lifestyle is not about a quick fix, but about making minor modifications and being consistent.
